Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is one of the most important and lively squares in central London. It was created in 1830 to commemorate the victory of the British Navy against the Spanish and the French in the Battle of Trafalgar.

In the center of the square stands the majestic Nelson Column, built in 1843 in honor of Admiral Nelson, who died while in command of the British Navy at the Battle of Trafalgar.

The 50-meter high granite column is crowned by a statue of Admiral Nelson and surrounded by four large lions, built from the molten bronze of the French fleet's cannon.

In the northern part of the square stands the majestic National Gallery and in front of it are two grandiose fountains that light up when night falls.

In the square you can see several statues of celebrities including George Washington. This statue, a gift from the state of Virginia, is located on land imported from the United States, as Washington vowed never to set foot on British soil.
Trafalgar Square at Christmas

As a sign of gratitude from the Norwegian people to British support during World War II, since 1947 it is tradition that Oslo donates a fir tree to stand as a Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square.
